Pubgoers were shocked as police officers stormed their watering hole and arrested four men on drugs offences on Friday night.

Police officers carried out the raid on the Windmill Pub in Stafford Road, Wallington, after getting intelligence that there was drug dealing going on inside.

They lay in wait outside the pub until the suspects arrived before bursting in through the main door and the side door simultaneously just before 8pm.

Pub regulars sat and watched as suspects were handcuffed and led to a back room where they were searched. Officers shut the doors to new people arriving at the pub and anyone leaving had to go past a sniffer dog.

A 30-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of intent to supply cocaine and has been bailed pending further enquiries.

A 46-year-old man was arrested and charged with possession of cocaine and is due to appear in front of Croydon magistrates on March 11.

Two other men, a 42-year-old man and a 50-year-old man were given cautions and a 20-year-old man was given a cannabis warning.

Detective Chief Inspector Jane Corrigan and Inspector Ian Hicks led the operation. It involved officers from Sutton's proactive crime squad, detectives from Sutton CID and safer neighbourhoods officers. They were supported by police dog units.

Inspector Hicks said: "This operation was all about arresting and disrupting those involved in drugs supply and drugs activities."

The pub closed after the raid and has not reopened since. Members of the public approached police during the raid and told officers they supported it.
