A man has been arrested after dangerous chemicals were poured through the letterbox of a house.

The incident happened at Winbarton, in Chipstead Lane, Lower Kingswood, last Thursday, March 6, between 7pm and 8pm.

An Epsom fireman said the brigade was called to the house at 9pm and that dangerous chemicals were found when the property was searched.

A spokesman for South East Coast Ambulance Service said a man in his 70s was suffering from the effects of inhaling fumes.  He was treated at the scene by paramedics and then taken to Epsom Hospital.

Detective Sergeant Ian Cherrington added: "I would appeal to anyone who was in the area around the time of the offence and who saw anything suspicious to contact officers with information.

"Although one person has been arrested in connection with this offence we still need to piece together the events of that evening and therefore any information may prove vital."

A man in his 40s has been arrested and released on police bail until April 12.

Anyone with information should call the police on 101, quoting reference 45140017411, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
