Walkers were in mgood spirits despite the 14 mile march

The event raises money for the Royal Marsden Cancer Charity and started from the charity's Chelsea base before ending at its Sutton site in Downs Road.

All the money raised has not been counted yet, but early indications show the event will surpass the charity's £1million target and could be the most successful yet.

Amanda Heaton, community fundraising and development manager, from the Royal Marsden Cancer Charity, said: "A big thank you to everyone who gave up their Sunday to come along today.

"This is the fourth year in a row we have run the Marsden March, and today has seen more walkers than ever taking part.

"We are overwhelmed with the support we have received from walkers, helpers and celebrities today.

"It is wonderful to  see so many people marching between our hospital sites with one clear goal – to walk together to take on cancer."

Among the marchers were several well-known faces including Richard and Fred Fairbrass, better known as pop stars Right Said Fred. Richard Fairbrass said: "Once again I have had such a fantastic day; it’s been lots of fun with a great atmosphere.

"Over the course of 14 miles I’ve had a chance to meet and talk to so many wonderful people who have come together to take part in this special event. I’m pretty tired now and hopefully won’t be too full of aches and pains tomorrow but if I am it will be worth it! I look forward to next year’s March already!"

Other walkers took on a smaller version of the walk that started from Raynes Park and ended at the Sutton site.

The event raises money for the charity's cancer research and treatment.
