Regarding your front page story (Our Scientific Breakthrough, March 20)  about a secondary school, research centre, and hotel on the Sutton Hospital site: I'm afraid the Lib Dems’ pre-election smokescreen can’t conceal years of complacent inaction.

In November 2012 you reported that a new high school could open by 2015, then in January 2014 you reported that this school was “required by 2017”. Last week’s article stated that the places are needed “by 2019”.

In fact, Sutton’s primary school expansion means that we need one new high school by 2017 then another by 2019. For years the high school shortage has been looming, but they've done nothing. In contrast, Croydon will open one new high school this year, another next year and last June announced several further sites.

Sutton Council doesn't own the hospital land, may not get it, grand developments always face delays, and anyway this will only provide one school. Lib Dems love a flashy election promise, but their complacency will cost our students if they have no school place in 2017.
