More than 60 trees have been lost in Sutton since 2010, a Freedom of Information request has revealed.

Across London there has been an increase in trees of just under 9,000 since 2010 with 30,680 planted and 21,705 felled, according to figures revealed by Greater London Assembly member Jenny Jones.

But in Sutton there has been a reduction of 61 trees with 598 trees being planted and 658 being felled between 2010 and 2013.

Sutton is one of just seven London boroughs to have cut down more trees than it has planted along with Croydon, Kingston, Barnet, Bromley, Lewisham and Southwark.

Green Party member Ms Jones said: "At a time we should be preserving and building up our street tree stocks to help cool and combat the health impacts of heatwaves, a number of boroughs are going backwards, chopping down more trees than they are planting"

"To help London adapt to temperature increases the Mayor of London has a strategic aim of increasing tree canopy cover by five per cent by 2025, the equivalent of 2 million extra trees.

"However it is not clear how this will be achieved, nor how this is targeted towards the most built up locations where heat island effect is most pronounced and the risk to vulnerable people is greatest"
