A chef is bidding to become the first winner from Sutton of MasterChef.

Rani Pathare, from Sutton Common, is currently in the running to be crowned MasterChef 2014.

Viewers will find out tonight if Rani Pathare, 37 will go through the Quarter finals and be in the chance of going onto the semi-finals and thereafter win the show.

Mrs Pathare, said she began cooking when she was 10 years old and living in Mumbai, India and that she was inspired by the aromas of her mother and grandmother’s cooking.

She said: "My family is really into cooking. We all are passionate about cooking food. I have grown up seeing my mother cooking in the kitchen and seeing my grandmother cooking in the kitchen too.

"The budding chef described herself as an amateur cook who realised from feedback that she had the potential to make a career out of her talent.

She cooks high-end Indian food but adds little twists.

She said: "When I cooked people used to say how delicious the dishes were and that I was good. I see recipes on TV and I put my own twist on it and it comes out wonderfully."

Wherever she finishes in the show she plans to start a catering business and eventually open a restaurant in Sutton. She says she occasionally gets takeaways and eats out in Sutton and the food is "pretty good" but there is more to Indian cooking than what we see.

She said: "I want to show there is more to Indian food than chicken masala. I really want to make cuisine which is regional, and make home cooking available in Sutton."

She said her family is "elated" at her success and that they think she is a celebrity already. Friends that she has seen for a long time have got in touch to say they saw her on the show and that she was doing really well.

Her eight year old son who goes to All Saints Benhilton is excited to see her on TV Rani has lived in Sutton since she first moved to the UK 11 years ago.

She is competing for one of two places in Knockout Week in week six of the series.

Master Chef is on tonight at 8.30pm on BBC1.
