A teenage girl is in hospital with serious head injuries after being run down as two drivers apparently raced each other in a Carshalton street.

Police are hunting two drivers who failed to stop after a 16-year-old girl and a 22-year-old man were knocked down in Welbeck Road, Carshalton, shortly before 9.20pm on Saturday.

The girl was taken to St George's Hospital in Tooting for treatment to a serious head injury and remains there today.

The man was taken to St Helier Hospital for treatment to cuts and bruises.

A witness said two cars - a silver Volkswagen Golf and a Vauxhall Corsa - were racing each other along the residential street before they collided with the two pedestrians.

The road was closed for several hours while police and paramedics attended.

If you have information you can call police on 101 or the charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

I really hope they catch these sum.

How sick to leave two people you have just collided with and drive off.

I hope both make full recoveries.

I've seen more idiots than usual racing down Welbeck Rd recently- they lay rubber as they race off and when they turn a corner the squealing of their tyres is just appalling. These are residential roads, and their disrespect and recklessness needs to be severely dealt with. I wish the victims a speedy recovery, and for our useless Council to finally sit up and pay attention to what we've all been reporting to them for years. We need better speed restrictions on the estate!

Hope the pair make a quick recovery.
I actually live on Welbeck Rd - the middle section and I can honestly say I have never seen or heard racing outside my house, of course you get the occasional idiot going too fast but that is about it.

Wanda, you know me from the Walk. I wish you and Shanize well- your poor family must be going through hell. I was out on Saturday but my other half told me what happened and I was just so sad for you all. You were very kind to me when my cat was killed on Welbeck Rd, and I've never forgotten it. I really hope she makes a full recovery and is soon home with you. As I said to your husband on Sunday, you know where we are if we can do anything at all, and I am speaking to a local Councillor about speed issues on the estate. Much love to you all x
