Hundreds of books were given away for free in Sutton during World Book Night.

Volunteers from libraries across the borough handed out titles and held activities to celebrate the joy of reading, as part of the nationwide event.

World Book Night is aimed towards the 35 per cent of the British population who do not read for pleasure.

Across the country, more than 250,000 books were handed out for free on Wednesday, April 23.

In Sutton, Sutton Central Library gave away 144 books while in Cheam, people were asked to take part in a mystery book challenge - taking away a book with the cover wrapped up, without knowing the title.

In Wallington, book worms were tested with a literary quiz where competitors had to identify the opening line from famous novels.

Angela Fletcher, head of libraries and heritage, said: “Giving books away is a fantastic way to get people into reading.

"All over the country people have come together to celebrate and share their love of books.

"I hope the activities in our libraries will have inspired people to begin a life-long love for reading.”

Do the authors get paid royalties for this? If not this is stealing their income. Not a problem for big-name authors but the vast majority earn vanishingly small royalties as it is without their work being given away for free.
