A determined former soldier took on the elements to do a charity challenge for his injured comrades.

Mick Chandler has raised more than £1,000 for charity by marching and running the 65mile length of Hadrian Wall at the border of England and Scotland.

The Sutton man set himself a day for the challenge but, despite driving rain that meant he had to constantly change out of wet clothes, he managed it in less than 20 hours.

Mr Chandler completed the feat to raise money for Care for Casualties, a charity that looks after soldiers from the Rifles regiment.

The 57-year-old, who served with the Royal Green Jackets, one of four regiments that merged to form the rifles in 2007, said: "It was tough. The big was that overnight it rained the whole time.

We started at 4pm and it started raining at 4.10pm and rained right through to 4.15am with the wind in my face the whole time.

"It felt like someone was spraying a hose at me. The rain was going through my waterproofs. I would meet up with my support man in the van every few miles and change and he would try to dry my clothes on the heater so I could change back  into them."
