Croydon is proud to be a British Heart Foundation Heart Town and I wonder whether we are also proud to be a Fat Town.

It certainly seems that way because instead of stocking up on healthy fruit and veg at Surrey Street market, people are more likely to be seen queuing outside a chicken shop for greasy grub.

This gluttony comes at a price with hordes of fatties waddling their way through the town centre.

I’m no size zero (a size six in case you were wondering) but I wish people - both men and women - would take better care of their bodies.

There’s no need to join a gym, just walk a bit more quickly and eat fewer calories than you burn off and you will be fine.

If not the chances are you will be eating yourself into an early grave and exacerbating the borough’s burial space crisis.

So, put down that pie and pick up a new lease of life.
