Walk in the footsteps of thousands of racegoers who once journeyed to the illustrious Derby.

The Derby Walk, this Sunday, pays homage to Londoners who went on an annual pilgrimage to Epsom Downs during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

The walk starts at Tattersall's Tavern in Knightsbridge and ends at Epsom Downs Racecourse and money raised goes to eye cancer research charity Caroline’s Vision for Cancer.

On its website, Derby fan John Sandys said: "For many years I’ve not only been fascinated by the race, but also by the many thousands of people who travel to Epsom Downs every Derby Day, particularly the people who many years ago made their annual pilgrimage to the downs under their own steam, shanks’ pony, trap and buggy.

"I’ve often wondered what it would be like to embark on such a journey, planning weeks in advance, saving every last penny for a feast of food and drink, up at the crack of dawn, tired but excitedly joining the merry throng on this day."

The walk begins at 9am this Sunday, May 18.
