A scheme which has seen the orange glow of Surrey’s street lights transformed into white, energy efficient bulbs will finish a year ahead of schedule.

Surrey County Council’s programme has seen nearly 88,000 street lights across the country replaced or upgraded to provide brighter lighting on roads and pavements.

Walton High Street is among the roads to benefit from the new bulbs, which the council said will save £12m through better contract deals and lower energy bills over the next 25 years.

Councillor Peter Martin, deputy leader of Surrey County Council, said: “Finishing a year early is great news and makes that orange glow in Surrey’s night sky a thing of the past.

“It’s a glowing endorsement of the way everyone involved has pulled together to bring the clarity of brighter, whiter lights to our streets and pavements.

“The increased visibility makes Surrey residents feel safer while the energy efficient technology is both good for the pocket and the environment.”

The new bulbs will also reduce the amount of light pollution and can be controlled by computers so levels can be adjusted.
