Football fans wanting to watch the World Cup in the borough's pubs have been warned they must behave or be banned.

Police in Sutton will be carrying out extra patrols to coincide with England games and all licensees have briefed on what to look out for during the tournament.

Known troublemakers will also be getting home visits from police to encourage them to drink and behave responsibly during the competition.

Under the PubWatch scheme, anyone who misbehaves in one pub could face being banned from all of Sutton's pubs.

Posters encouraging drinkers not to be violent when they get home have also been distributed around pubs. The posters have slogans like 'bring football home, not violence', 'blow the whistle on World Cup violence' and 'hands off your partner or face our penalties'.

Chief Inspector Mark Hill, who has been co-ordinating the police activities, said: "Major sporting events like football tournaments can lead to an increase in the consumption of alcohol - which can lead to an increase in abuse in the home.

"We are keen to get the message out that drink-fuelled domestic violence will not be tolerated. We are encouraging victims and the public to report domestic abuse so we can deal with it and put a stop to it."

Police licensing Sergeant John Withersby added: "With the public's help, we can make this a safe and successful World Cup and continue to keep Sutton a low crime borough and one of the safest boroughs in London."

As well as contacting offenders and carrying out extra patrols, particularly  after England games, police have organised three one-stop-shop road shows where anyone who fears they may be at risk of domestic violence during the tournament can get advice from a specialist police officer, a solicitor and an independent domestic violence advocate.

These sessions will take place at the Tweeddale Children's Centre in Tweeddale Road Carshalton from 9.30am to 11.30am on Tuesday, June 17, Amy Johnson Children's Centre in Mollison Drive, Wallington, from 9.30am to 11.30am on Friday, June 27, and at the Shanklin Children's Centre in Rookley Close, Sutton, from 1.30pm to 3.30pm on Tuesday, July 1.
