Three girls who started a fire on Sutton High Street have confessed to police.

They were caught on CCTV setting a bag of a rubbish alight next to a tree near The Grapes pub on Sutton High Street on Friday, May 9.

The girls, who have not been arrested, are all 15 and from outside the borough of Sutton.

On Monday, May 19 police appealed through the media to help find the girls.

Within a few hours of a video and stills be released the teenagers were identified.

When the girls were interviewed at Sutton Police station earlier this week, they admitted what they had done.

The Sutton Guardian reported the arson with images and a video of the incident.

They are being dealt with the Triage Youth Restorative Intervention scheme, an initiative between the London Criminal Justice Board and Youth Justice Board, which to reduce youth reoffending by diverting them away from the courts system.

Sutton Guardian:

The girls gather round the tree before starting the fire

As part of the scheme youngsters have to attend a Triage Clinic, where they are supported to stop offending.

For the most minor offences, where the young person is seen as a low reoffending risk, they are usually asked to write a letter of apology.

You can't polish a T*#D. Why travel to out borough to do it, and now the taxpayer floors the bill for the job their parents should be doing

Triage Youth Restorative Intervention scheme? What a load of round objects.
Charge them with arson & send them to court. That would be a deterrent, not this intervention rubbish.

Of course they confessed - they had no choice given the evidence! The ought to be charged with arson and put in jail.

They should be charged, thats the only deterant not a slap on the wrists. What starts of as petty crime soon escalades when they arent being punished. And as for writting a letter, er who to, the tree?

They have not been arrested? So therefore have not been charged with an offence. Arson is not a petty crime. It isn't like nicking a pencil with Smiths. It is a serious offence. And also they committed criminal damage.

They are 15 years old, from outside the borough yet were in Sutton Town Centre on a Friday night. Shows how much parenting was going on with their lives. Unless their parents get involved with their lives more, triage will be a waste of time.

However, it seems to me that triage in this case means that the next time they do something and are actually charged, that will be counted as a first offence. So they will not be counted as having reoffended. Good for the local and national figures and on the surface makes the YJB and YOT look better than they might actually be.
