A former headteacher and an environmental health expert from the area have been named in the Queen's Birthday Honours list.

Dr Stephen Battersby from Sutton has been given and OBE for services to environmental health and Roger Easthope from Worcester Park has been given the same honour for services to education.

Mr Easthope was headteacher at Cheam Common Junior School in Kingsmead Road, Worcester Park, for 15 years until he retired in the summer. Prior to that, the 62-year-old was a deputy head teacher at the same school for 10 years.

He has also managed the Sutton borough primary schools' football team for 37 years and thinks it may have been through that he got nominated for the gong.

The married father-of-two said: "The list came out on Saturday but I got a letter a ago so that's when I first knew.

"I was shocked - it was a huge surprise. You don't know you've been nominated so that's the first you know and it came out of the blue.

"I don't know when I will be invited to pick it up, there is a four or five month lag.

"It's usually the Queen who gives them out but it is also sometimes Prince Charles and Prince William. I don't really mind who I get but it would be nice to get the Queen as my mum's 91 and I think she would be impressed."

Dr Battersby is a former president of the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health and now works as a chartered environmental health practitioner and an environmental health and housing consultant.
