People power was out in full force yesterday to try and make an accident black spot safer.

Neighbours living in Malden Road, Cheam, carried out a survey to see how many pedestrians used the road’s zebra crossing and how many chose not to.

On June 4 we reported on a biker who was seriously injured on the road, where the number of accidents has piled up over the years.

Cheam Councillor Mary Burstow said: "I was shocked to see that between 8.00 and 9.00, 11 cars drove through the zebra crossing, whilst people were crossing or were waiting to cross.

“We have taken their registration numbers and the police will be in contact with them."

In December last year a 12-year-old girl was knocked down by a car at the Malden Road crossing.
