Worcester Park benefits cheat avoids jail for cheating the taxpayer out of almost £10,000

Sutton Guardian: Worcester Park benefits cheat avoids jail for cheating the taxpayer out of almost £10,000 Worcester Park benefits cheat avoids jail for cheating the taxpayer out of almost £10,000

A benefits cheat who conned almost £10,000 out of the taxpayer has been sentenced to community service.

Suna Grainger, of Stoneleigh Avenue in Worcester Park, claimed to be a single parent living alone  when in actual fact she was living with her partner who was in work.

This resulted in her being paid £9,164.99 she was not owed.

Grainger appeared in front Wimbledon magistrates who acknowledged that her claims were initially true but said she failed to notify the Sutton Council of the change in her circumstances and continued to claim benefits she knew she was not entitled to.

Councillor Nick Emerson, the council's lead member for revenues and benefit, said: "Mrs Grainger lied to the council in order to falsely claim thousands of pounds in council tax benefit she was not entitled to.

"Council tax benefit exists so that people can receive help when they need it. Mrs Grainger abused this scheme and as a result now has a criminal record."

Grainger was sentenced to 60 hours of community service and ordered to pay £160 in costs in court on June 24.

If you think someone is a tax cheat, you can contact the council's investigation team on 020 8770 5687.

So, she fraudently claims £10,000 but only has to pay back £160. Pathetic sentence. What's the point in putting in all those investigative hours by the council's benefit fraud team getting it court in the first place just for this result? They must be banging their heads against the wall in frustration.

Co Hab - the most common type of benefit fraud but the hardest to prove. and then it would appear even if it is proven the punishment given isn't worth it.

No wonder our country's welfare system is in a mess, where's the deterrent to stop this happening again - there isn't one.

I think she should be made to repay the whole £10000. She is getting off too easily.

Totally agree with the other comments. What a liberty! Bet she's laughing about it. I'd make her pay back every last penny and interest as well.

Commit £9,164.99 worth of fraud and the penalty (if you actually, eventually get caught is having to keep £9104.99
So you keep 100% of it if you don't get caught...
And you keep 99.3% of it if you do get caught...
Oh, but to be fair, you have to do 60 hours community service, so for £9104.99 that would be a pay rate of £151.95 - TAX FREE!
Crime really does pay in the London Borough of Sutton!
It seems everyone has worked that out except Cllr. Nick Emmerson!

I should add, that is £151.95 , TAX FREE, against a minimum wage of £6.31 - less expenses and taxes.
But perhaps the worst thing about this situation is not the crime at all. It is that Cllr. Emmerson, seems to think a penalty of a 'Criminal Record' (gasp!) fits the crime And he's none other than "the council's lead member for revenues and benefit"! Can anyone be that green?
If he offered every Sutton resident £9,000 to accept a criminal record, the queue would stretch from one end of the Borough to the other! Clearly Cllr. Emmerson is highly unsuited for the responsibility he holds.
