The council got rid of more than 200 computers last year, and are yet to explain how they disposed of the items.

Figures obtained through a Freedom of Information request show in 2013 Sutton Council got rid of 82 laptops, 120 desktop computers and 185 monitors.

It also offloaded 50 desktop printers and 39 miscellaneous items such as scanners and fax machines.

The Sutton Guardian has contacted the council for an explanation as to how it disposes of electronic goods, but is yet to receive a response.

Conservative party member Leon Emirali, said: "I would be very interested to hear from the Council exactly what happens to this equipment once it has been disposed.

"I am sure many of these computers and laptops would be of value to Sutton's small businesses and groups.

"Council taxpayers have a right to know what procedures are in place to get the most value out of council property for the benefit of the wider community."

A Sutton Council spokesman said: "Our disposals policy is that we only retire equipment at end of its useful service life.

"Due to data protection and security concerns we have to be very careful how equipment is disposed of, it simply cannot be sold off to the general public.

"We only use disposal agents authorised under the regulations."
