Sutton train station has been nominated for an award in recognition of high standards in customer service.

The borough will go toe-to-toe with Barnham and Bognor Regis in the Best Large Station category at Southern Rail’s Stars and Tsars Awards.

A £1.3million revamp of Sutton station was completed in March, bringing an extension, new barriers, ticket machines, and CCTV to the site.

Work is also underway to upgrade the station’s walkway, improving access to the nearby Quadrant House and the rear of the complex.

Sutton station welcomes almost six million passengers a year and is one of the 18 most congested in London.

The judging panel includes passengers, Southern managers, and a winner from the previous year’s awards.

The winner of each category will be announced at a ceremony on Tuesday, August 19.

Was it??? I don't think so... get your facts rights they are still building the extension, and the existing barriers have been there for at least 10+ years!!
On an additional note how did the station get this award?? From my experience, the majority of the staff there are pretty rude and arrogant!!

Have to agree with the comments above. There have been no new ticket machines ( more would be welcome) and customer service is patchy at best. That along with the fact the station is over crowded, and peak time trains to London bridge are standing room only ( where are the longer trains? Where are the more frequent services?) , the only award I would recommend is for more investment in both station capacity and frequency of service. This will be compounded further as the new residential developments come 'on-line'.

Agree with the above
Staff apart from one person are rude, and not really interested
Unfortunately these new residential developments throw up the need for many more facilities in Sutton not just an improved station
Schools - car parking - doctors - dentists - bigger hospital to name some

I've had reason to be in contact with the staff at Sutton station a number of times and have always found them very helpful. When people complain about others being rude, I always wonder if it is anything to do with the way the person concerned has approached those they are complaining about

I am lost for words! The station scores barely above acceptable levels on customer service. I dread asking a question as I am left feeling like I have interrupted their day. Also when there are delays you have to beg for or demand updates. Any award will compound the situation.

I always find people who write the above only think about their own situations; I've had many dealings with the staff at this station; only 2 out of the ticket office staff are helpful- the rest treat you as if you have interrupted their day; the staff that man the ticket gates treat you with such disdain its a joke; guards on the platforms know less than the boards. How on earth their customer services skills are up for an award is completely beyond me

I can only write about my own situation, and I personally , have found them very helpful when I needed assistance (I mean mainly the staff on the ticket gates as I have a pass so rarely need to buy a ticket). That is my experience, nothing more I can say. Perhaps people need to address whatever concerns they have to the station master? (I assume there is one)

there is a station master, and he is particularly diligent.
