The new korfball season kicks off this weekend with Trojans looking to defend their national title.

The Croydon-based side beat Bec, based in Tooting, 18-17 in last season's England Korfball League final - and thay have boosted their hopes with the summer signing of the league's leading points scorer Toby Clarke.

Bec are coached by Dave Buckland, who is also the coach of the England national team, and they have added Sara Roberts to their squad from Birmingham City.

Epsom-based Nomads, who finished third last season, have strengthed the squad with the addition of Carina Lamelas from Mitcham.

In the first round of matches on Sunday, Trojans host Kent side Kingfishers, while Bec 1 are also at home against Norwich Knights, and Nomads play at Birmingham City.

Korfball, invented in Holland and with its roots in basketball and netball, is a mixed team sport with four male and four female players on each team.
