A collapsed stretch of road diverting traffic in Sutton town centre is due to a sewer caving in on itself, Thames Water has confirmed.
St Nicholas Way has been shut off since around 2pm on Wednesday afternoon, after part of the road subsided opposite Empire Cinemas.
Thames Water engineers carried out a survey last night to identify the cause, but the firm is still unable to confirm when repair work will begin.
A company spokesperson said: "The survey revealed it is a sewer collapse.
"We are now planning the best way to finish this job as quickly as possible.
"We are sorry for any disruption."
The diversion in place yesterday morning
The top of St Nicholas Way at the junction with Cheam Road was closed off on Wednesday, causing lengthy journeys home for motorists and bus commuters.
Yesterday the top of the road had been reopened, but motorists were being diverted left down West Street as they approached the St Nicholas Centre.
