Sutton Council claim Thames Water engineers are still unaware what caused part of St Nicholas Way to collapse on Wednesday.

This is despite the firm telling us engineers working on the site Thursday night had confirmed it was because a sewer had collapsed.

The council report they are working alongside Thames Water to work out what caused the road to subside.

During this the council will be carrying out highway patching, gully cleaning, and manhole and drain inspections to save the public future disruptions.

The collapse has caused traffic chaos in Sutton town centre, with cars travelling down St Nicholas Way being diverted left down West Street just before they reach the St Nicholas Centre.

Traffic delays can be expected over the weekend.
