A flat was partially gutted last night after a fire ripped through the property’s dining room.

Sutton firefighters arrived at the block in Thicket Crescent, Sutton, at around 10.05pm after a neighbour heard a smoke alarm going off.

The occupants of the flat were not in when the fire started and tore through part of their home.

Paramedics from the London Ambulance Service treated a firefighter who was injured, and a resident was treated for smoke inhalation.

The nature of the fire officer’s injury is unclear, and an investigation unit is looking into what caused the blaze.

Sutton fire station sent two engines to the block, and firefighters were there until 1.55am this morning.

A spokesman from the fire service said: "This incident shows the benefit of owning a working smoke alarm.

"A neighbour was alerted by the alarm, meaning we could get to the scene before the fire caused too much damage."
