Wimbledon Hockey Club will wander into their neighbour’s back yard this weekend on the back of a five-star showing, but the head coach says there is still demanding more.

Ben Marsden takes his side to current MHL Premier Division leaders Surbiton on Saturday, looking to build on a five-match winning streak.

That run continued last weekend with a 5-0 thrashing of Canterbury at King’s College, which features a Phil Roper brace, plus goals from skipper Ben Hawes, James Osborn and Steven Ebbers.

The three points keeps the Dons fourth in the table, six points off the top, but five points clear of fifth-placed Hampstead & Westminster.

However, Marsden wants more from his charges.

“It was a great result against Canterbury, although I think the scoreline flattered us a little bit,” he said.

“We put in a very business-like performance and we deserved the three points, but I still think there are some areas of our game that we can work on and improve - it’s difficult to put your finger on what exactly.

“The players didn’t do anything wrong, and Canterbury didn’t threaten our goal too much, but perhaps we did not play with the intensity that we did against East Grinstead Town.

“We need to play at that faster pace and high intensity for 70 minutes at least, which we know we’ll have to do against Surbiton.”

After a patchy start to the season, which started with back to back defeats an only two goals, Marsden says they asked themselves serious questions about what they wanted to achieve.

He said: “We were scratching our heads a little bit at the start, after going down 2-1 against Hampstead and losing 3-1 at Beeston, and we thought goals were going to be difficult to come by.

“We’ve done a lot of work on forward leading, finishing and positioning, as well as a lot of attack v defence, and our forwards have stepped up the mark massively.

“After those first two results we had to ask ourselves some questions all around the park – and everyone started to question what they were doing individually and we have righted those wrongs.”

This weekend will mark only the third meeting between Wimbledon and Surbiton in the Premier League, with both of last season's fixtures ending all square.

Marsden said: "There is always a litte extra spice playing Surbiton, and last time out they only got a draw with late goals, so we know we can match them.

"The fact they are top only adds to the excitement."
