Early Christmas cards might never reach their destination after an arsonist torched a Royal Mail post box last night.
Firemen were called to the red post box in Winchcombe Road, close to the junction with Tweedale Road in St Helier, at 9pm.
Mitcham fire station sent one fire engine and one officer to the smoking post box.
The fireman who dealt with the blaze said it was difficult to open up the post box so he inserted a nozzle into the hole and sprayed powder to rapidly extinguish the blaze and save as many letters as he could.
It is not known how many letters were damaged or destroyed.
