A dog attacked a 63-year-old woman as she tried to fend it off with a shopping trolley.

The woman was in Orchard Avenue Recreation Ground in Hackbridge when the dog, understood by Sutton police to be named "Barney", attacked.

She was bitten on her right thigh before a member of the public intervened and pulled the large short-haired black dog, around the size of a greyhound, off her.

Following the Tuesday, December 9, attack at 10.20am, Sutton police launched a witness appeal to trace the dog's owner.

She is described as white, aged between 20 and 30 years old, with short brown hair. At the time of the attack she was wearing a blue jacket.

Police would like the owner of the dog to come forward and to trace the member of the public who came to the 63-year-old's assistance.
