An inspirational headteacher who turned a boys comprehensive into an outstanding school is to step down next year to concentrate on helping improve other schools.

Jon Chaloner has announced he is to leave his position at Glyn School, in The Kingsway, Ewell, next August after nine years at the helm.

During Mr Chaloner’s time there it has achieved two ‘outstanding’ Ofsted reports - in 2009 and 2012.

He took over the role in 2006, the same year it was threatened with a 'notice to improve' by Ofsted.

Mr Chaloner said he is leaving to concentrate on his role as chief executive officer of the GLF Schools group - a trust created in 2012 around Glyn’s status as a National Support School.

It consists of non-selective primary, secondary and special schools in the South East which are provided with the support and strategy required to improve by staff at Glyn.

Mr Chaloner said the growth of his role within GLF has brought about his decision.

He said: "This was an extremely difficult decision but it is one that has to be made now that Glyn is one of 12 schools within GLF.

"Being at Glyn has been an enjoyable and successful part of my professional life, and I am delighted with the school’s success over the years.

"Glyn is now a Leading Edge School, a National Support School and a National Teaching School - these accolades confirm the work that staff at Glyn share with colleagues in other schools.

"My role at GLF means that I will still have a connection to Glyn, but it also provides me with an opportunity to try and help lead similar improvements at our other member schools."

Paul Carpenter, chair of governors, paid tribute to Mr Chaloner’s "exceptional" contribution to the school’s development and reassured parents that Glyn would continue to flourish.

He said: "Mr Chaloner’s contribution to Glyn School is remarkable.

"Under his charge, standards have been raised, facilities have improved, teaching is better and more opportunities are available to students.

"The governors have a structure in place to find his successor, and we have advertised the position.

"We will ensure that we have a new Headteacher installed for September to write the next chapter of the Glyn School story."
