A woman who was moved out of a failing care home which was closed down last month died on Christmas Day.

A spokesman for Sutton Council said that a 91-year-old woman who was moved from Grantley Court Nursing Home, in York Road, Sutton, died on December 25.

The home was closed on December 12 after the Care Quality Commission (CQC) – the health and social care watchdog – identified “significant failings in safety and quality of care”.

The news follows the death of an 85-year-old man after he was moved out of another failing nursing home nearby which was owned by the same man.

A Sutton Council spokesman said: “A 91-year-old woman who was moved from Grantley Court care home sadly died on Christmas Day.

"The cause of death is unknown at this stage.

"We have been in contact with relatives and have offered our sympathies.”

The woman had been moved to another nursing home following the closure of Grantley Court.

It believed the woman’s death is not linked to the move. Grantley Court was shut down following three damning inspections by the CQC in which the nursing home failed all the key standards.

These ranged from respect for residents to nutrition, safeguarding people from abuse, cleanliness and infection control, safety and availability of equipment, record keeping and the way it managed and supported staff.

It followed the closure of Merok Park Nursing Home, in Park Road, Banstead, which was run by the same owner – Cheam millionaire Soondressen Cooppen.

It was shut down suddenly by the CQC just days before – on December 9 – after the watchdog discovered its elderly residents, many of them dementia sufferers, were at “significant risk of harm”.

At Merok Park, people were being washed with cold, living in an under-staffed home which smelt of urine and workers had not had criminal records checks.

An 85-year-old man died less than 36 hours after being moved out of the home. He was moved to Warrengate Nursing Home, in Kingswood, where it is understood he died.

The cause of his death is not known.
