A ‘traumatised’ mother has told of the ‘horrifying’ moment she feared for her son’s life, when a car came hurtling past them before smashing into a post.

Glenna Burgess and her four-year-old Ryan were enjoying a morning stroll down Malden Road in Cheam, when the driver seemed to lose control.

After crashing near the junction with Netley Close and Chatsworth Road, the motorist ploughed into a wall and ended up in a front garden.

Ms Burgess, 42, was roughly 50 yards away from the car when she witnessed the carnage.

She said: "I am still in shock now, I feel different, almost traumatised.

"I really feared for my little boy’s life because you always anticipate the worst in these situations.

"It was the noise that really stood out, it was a horrifying thing to witness, the noise was just awful.

"I can’t possibly say how fast she was going, all I can say is the driver must have lost control.

"It was truly terrifying."

Ms Burgess, who lives in adjacent Chatsworth Road, described the car as a black VW Polo, and said the woman driving looked to be in her 50s.

A Met Police spokesperson has said an elderly couple were in the car at the time, and no arrests were made. They also reported the collision is suspected to be due to a vehicle fault.

The London Ambulance Service arrived at 11:52am, and treated two people who were not seriously injured.

They are unable to confirm the ages or sexes of those who were treated, but it is understood one of them was the female driver.

Ms Burgess, who works as a beauty technician at Carshalton College, has feared for her children’s safety since she moved to the Malden Road area four years ago.

The mother-of-two continued: "You do hear about a lot of accidents around here. When my daughter goes out I am always telling her to be extra careful.

"I am still in shock now.

"I am not sure about the effect this has had on Ryan, I will have to keep an eye on him.

"After the crash the woman just got out the car. Two young girls came over and one of them phoned an ambulance. Another man got out of his van to make sure the woman was OK.

"I just stood there, I was too stunned to find my phone."

Malden Road has become an accident blackspot in recent years with the number of collisions piling up all the time.

The crash shortly before midday took place near a pelican crossing, which was recently installed after a road safety drive from local campaigners.
