Five people are injured after two cars smashed into each other near the Cheam and Ewell border.

A woman in her 20s and a man in his 30s were taken to St Helier Hospital as priorities, while two others were taken to St George’s Hospital in Tooting.

The man suffered a head injury  but was conscious when taken to hospital.

A fifth person didn’t require hospital treatment.

The sexes and ages of three people involved in the collision is unclear, and none of the injuries are said to be life-threatening or life-changing.

A London Ambulance Spokesperson said: "We were called at 10.08am to reports of a road traffic collision at Banstead Road and Gilham's Avenue in Cheam involving two cars.

"We sent a single responder by car, two ambulance crews, and two duty officers to the scene.

"We were assisted by colleagues from South East Coast Ambulance Service."

An air ambulance attended the scene but those injured were taken to hospital by road.

Sutton police were called out shortly after at 10.11am this morning and reported one person had suffered a head injury, while another was trapped in a car.

The collision took place on a residential street

Tracey Strudwick, who lives in the Sutton area of Banstead Road, was out at yoga when one of the cars went crashing through her garden wall.

She said: "I heard a silver car was coming down the road when it tried to overtake another vehicle. A blue car then pulled out of a different road and they smashed into each other.

"One of my friends saw the damage when she drove past my house and phoned me up to tell me. I suppose I could at least be a little bit prepared for what I would see when I got home.

"I have lived here 18 months and there have been at least three crashes, they need to do something about the speed."

Firefighters were called at 10.13am and said a car was smoking on the side of the road when they got there.

A 29-year-old mother and her 11-year-old son were killed in Banstead Road last year, after a Ford Focus and Ford Fiesta crashed on a bend.

Banstead Road was partially shut off at both its junctions with Higher Drive while emergency services dealt with the aftermath of the collision.

Russell Giles, watch commander at Banstead fire station, said the London Fire Brigade were dealing with the traffic accident this morning.

Firefighters were called at 10.13am and said a car was smoking on the side of the road when they got there.

Even though the crash was only a quarter of a mile from the fire station, Mr Giles said their crew were on a call out to Epsom Hospital at the time.

He said: "It was a fire alarm in the Langley Wing. It’s a mental health wing and we think one of the patients broke an alarm [point].

"While that was going on, there was a road traffic accident in Banstead Road, which London are dealing with."

Part of Banstead Road was shut after the collision

Mr Giles said Epsom fire station did not have enough crew members this morning so their fire engine was off the road when the hospital fire alarm went off.

One of Epsom's two fire engines moved from the town centre to a building on the Banstead police station site in Banstead High Street in November.

The move doubles the time for a second fire engine to reach a serious fire in Epsom but allows it to reach other areas more quickly.
