A vicious brawl broke out near the parade of market stalls at the bottom of Sutton High Street this afternoon, with reports two white men and two black men fought each other with rods and traffic signs.

Sutton police were called out at 2.44pm, and have said eight men were involved in the fight outside Asda.

Market traders who witnessed the violence said just four men were involved.

One trader, who asked not to be named, said: “A white guy was pushing a bike up the high street on its back wheel, then a black kid came up and tried to pull the bike off him.

“Another white guy then came up the street and started pushing the black guy backwards.

“The black kid went to punch him, the second white kid had a bar up his sleeve and started whacking the poor little black kid over the head with it.

“The black kid got away and the white guy started chasing him, but then he realised a second black kid had arrived so he ran off.

“They were running about asking market traders for weapons, I am not really sure what happened.

“Then the second black kid came back with a gold bar that had some kind of gold triangle on the end, it was a nasty looking thing, I don’t have the foggiest what it was.

“They disappeared around a corner. I heard that a white kid had to be taken to hospital by ambulance.”

A police spokesman confirmed that two men have been arrested on suspicion of causing GBH while a man had been taken to hospital with a head injury. The extent of his injuries is unclear.

The trader said the black man holding a weapon looked about 22 to 23-years-old, while the other black man looked between 18 and 19-years-old.

He said the white man with the rod was aged 23 to 24, and the one pushing the bike was aged between 18 and 19.
