Sutton & Cheam Swimming Club were winning medals on two fronts last weekend.

The youth squad was in action at the Rushmoor Royals Open meeting in Aldershot and came away with 20 golds, 15 silvers and 11 bronzes.

The icing on the cake was that five swimmers, Kelly Bone, Poppy Phillips, Nubia Adjei, George Croom, Andrej Drzaic and Joseph Suggit, in addition to winning gold medals, swam personal bests and are now ranked in the top five in their age group in Surrey.

At the same time, the club’s top squad travelled to the south coast for the Portsmouth New Year Level 1 Open meeting. Joseph Lenihan was the shining star on the day winning four gold medals in the 100m and 200m backstroke as well as 100m and 200m freestyle.

Lenihan, who also won two silvers, is now ranked ninth in England on ASA rankings for his 200m backstroke.

Micheal Rees excelled in his 100m backstroke winning gold, and he also brought home a further three silvers and a bronze, while Jake Maxwell won 100m freestyle silver.

The weekend’s showing means the club goes into the next two weekend’s competitions in confident mood.

This weekend is the Sutton Borough gala at Westcroft, and they go to Cranleigh on January 24.
