Olivia Weedon is a girl in a hurry and hopes joining the family business could see her become a world champion one day.

The Twickenham 12-year-old was crowned British short track speed skating U13 girls champion in Nottingham earlier this month following in the footsteps of aunt Joanna Williams, who won the same event 20 years ago.

The family connection to the sport does not stop there with Williams now married to three-time British winter Olympian Jon Eley – Team GB’s flag bearer at the Sochi Games earlier this year.

Eley is a two-time world short track speed skating championship bronze medalist having twice finished third in the 5,000m relay event.

And Weedon is hoping she can better that record one day with an Olympic gold.

“I took up skating because I was brought up around it as all my family did it,” she said this week.

“My aunt is an inspiration because she went to the Olympics and so did my uncle Jon.

“I hope to be Olympic and world champion one day and my next target is to qualify for the Europa Cup final, which is a competition between east and west Europe for the top eight skaters from each region.”

Weedon, a student at St Catherine’s School in Twickenham, trains twice-a-week on ice in Guildford, plus two skating specific off ice sessions a week.

She fits it in around school work while also giving swimming, netball and hockey a go on top of turning out for St Mary’s Richmond Athletics Club, who she trains with in Strawberry Hill.

It is hard to imagine how she has time for it all, but collecting silverware makes it all worthwhile.

“I was happy to win because I had worked hard to get there,” she added.

“I felt especially happy when members of the GB team congratulated me.

“I train six days a week and have competed across Britain and western Europe to get to that standard.

“It has been my goal for the last two years.”
