A refurbished underpass has failed to upgrade the aesthetic beauty of Cheam station and has instead left it looking like a “filthy, wet and slippery subway”, users have said.
MP Paul Burstow has raised concerns that the cosmetic changes to the subway at Cheam station have made it a slip hazard for those using it to get across the railway line.
One user took to Twitter and posted that passengers should “beware”.
Rona Hunnisett wrote: “The underpass is like glass, c/o filth and a sheen of dirt. People going over like skittles.
“Why did they ever ‘refurbish’ it? The old dairy tiles were fab. It’s now revolting.”
Mr Burstow said: “The subway leaks and does not drain properly. “The results are a filthy, wet and slippery subway. I have contacted Southern Railways, asking them to take action to fix the problem.”
A spokesman for Southern said the underpass was clad to improve the overall environment and that he was “disappointed” to find that there were now problems.
He said: “We will inspect the underpass when it next rains heavily and assess what needs to be done.”
