Cadets from Sutton came out top at a London-wide award ceremony.

The Metropolitan Police Annual Cadets Ceremony was held at the London Oratory School, in West Brompton on Monday, January 19, with Sutton picking up more awards than any other borough.

Cadet Tony Cheng, 18, won Safer Neighbourhood Community Award for London in the 17 to 19 age group for the "outstanding amount of time" he had given to volunteering including stewarding at Sutton United Football Club, carrying out crime prevention leaflet drops and engaging with the public.

During a peak of demand, Tony volunteered 92 hours across 13 days.

Tony also received the Cadet of the Borough Award for Sutton, given to the top cadet from each of the 32 London boroughs.

Another Sutton cadet Jack Coombes, 14, received the Safer Neighbourhood Community Award for London in the 14 to 16 age group after volunteering for 68 hours during a 13-day period.

Met Police Special Sergeant at Sutton Grant Fulker, 21, an ex-cadet, won the London wide award for Cadet Staff Member of the Year. He was described in his citation as "bursting with can do attitude".

PCs Gill Nolan and Lorraine Roche, who took over managing Sutton's police cadets in February 2014, received a Special Recognition Award. Their citation read: "The hard work and time they have spent writing the nominations for this awards ceremony is very evident by the amount of awards that their cadets have won here this evening".

PC Nolan said: "I'm delighted and thrilled that we did so well - and extremely proud of our cadets and their commitment to volunteering." The Met Police cadet awards ceremony was attended by Helen King Assistant Commissioner for Territorial Policing and Stephen Greenhalgh, London deputy mayor for policing and Crime.

Sutton Supt Phil Willis represented the senior leadership team from Sutton police station and presented the Cadet of the Borough Award for Sutton to Tony Cheng.
