Former Commonwealth gold medallist Andy Turner has started a new career as a personal trainer at a Sutton leisure centre.

The 110m hurdler had a career which spanned more than 10 years including gold medals at the 2010 European Championships in Barcelona and Commonwealth Games in Delhi, as well as a bronze at the 2011 World Championships in Daegu, and competing in three Olympic Games.

After failing to make it past the first round of last summer’s Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Turner announced his retirement from athletics at the end of the year.

He said: “As a professional athlete I trained 25 hours a week over six days so health and fitness has always been a large part of my life.

“Becoming a personal trainer was just a natural progression for me. With my elite sports background and passion for fitness, I feel I can help others make healthier lifestyle choices and achieve their desired physique.”

Turner has trained with top British talent such as Olympic gold medallists Jessica Ennis-Hill and Christine Ohuruogu, and has helped them improve their fitness and performance levels, as well as working with one of Britain’s top athletics coaches in Lloyd Cowan.

The 34-year-old has decided to use his expertise as a personal trainer at Westcroft leisure centre in Carshalton, operated by Everyone Active in partnership with Sutton Council.

Everyone Active general manager Rebecca Eyles said: “We’re delighted to have Andy on board. It’s a fantastic opportunity for people here to learn from one of our country’s top sportsmen.”
