A five-year-old girl needed surgery after her finger was amputated by a fire door while she was left unattended at school, her parents have said.

Mum Margaret Chan contacted the Sutton Guardian when her daughter had to have surgery after getting her finger caught in the door at Cuddington Croft Primary School, in West Drive, Cheam.

The parents have said they will withdraw their children from the school due to its handling of the situation.

Mrs Chan, who lives with her husband and two daughters near Nonsuch Park, said: “She got sent back into the school building toilet alone unsupervised via a classroom where there are two fire doors. One of which amputated her finger tip. We went to see the school to understand what had happened. No one could tell us as it was ‘unwitnessed’ as they all said.”

Despite reassurances from the school the matter had been resolved, when she investigated the fire doors herself she said they still slammed shut.

Surgeons operated on January 19 with a recovery timetable set at three months.Your Local Guardian:

A county council spokesman said: “The safety and welfare of all Surrey children is of paramount importance and we will be speaking to the school to find out what happened to ensure this does not happen again.”
