An 89-year-old who was left on end-of-life care after being placed in a failing care home has died.

Edna Slann’s health deteriorated after she contracted a severe foot infection while a resident at Grantley Court Nursing Home, in York Road, Sutton.

She was placed there by Surrey County Council social services last June, even though an inspection by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) in January of that year had already identified concerns.

It was shut down by the CCQ in December.

Mrs Slann’s daughter Linda Cackett, of Manor Green Road, Epsom, said her mother died last Monday after suffering a massive stroke.

She said: "I am now even more determined to fight for our elderly relatives in care homes.

"I do not want what happened to mum to happen to anybody else and will do whatever I can to highlight the crisis in our care homes."

Ms Cackett has started an online petition calling for a judge-led inquiry into the care homes crisis.
