New street lighting is being installed throughout Croydon.
However there remains an urgent need for much better lighting elsewhere in the public realm, especially at bus stops. At many bus stops there is a street lamp nearby. But whoever put these bus stops in place all too often has placed the small print timetable panels facing away from the street lighting making it impossible to check bus times after dark.
Some bus stops have shelters, which often have some built-in lighting.
But the shelter lighting generally illuminates only advertisements, even when there is plenty of space for the timetables to be placed where they too can be seen.
Another problem is the very dimly lit destination blinds and route numbers on the front of buses. These are hard to read after dark anyway and even harder when would-be passengers are dazzled by much brighter head lamps.
