Long-delayed work to improve a controversial road junction in West Croydon that was earning the council around £1,500 in fines every day was finally due to start this week.

As reported previously in the Croydon Guardian, an average of 30 drivers a day were turning the wrong way into Poplar Walk from London Road and being fined at least £50.

All vehicles except buses, taxis and cyclists should turn right into Tamworth Road, but confusing signs meant many went straight into Poplar Walk where they were snapped by a camera.

The high number of drivers being fined outraged some residents and dozens of drivers contacted us to say they had been hit with a fine.

The high number of fines being issued meant the council was forced to admit something had to be done to make it easier for motorists to understand where they are supposed to go.

The long-delayed work to improve the approach to the junction was due to start on Monday.

The council blamed work done by Thames Water for the delay. Workers are to make alterations to kerbs and signs so drivers understand where they must go.
