I was one of several hundred people who attended the meeting in Kingston on February 27 to demonstrate opposition to Surrey County Council's plans for Nonsuch Park.

Despite pleas from the joint management committee that has funded the upkeep and maintenance of the park for more than 70 years, the Friends of Nonsuch and petitions from several thousand local people, I was profoundly disappointed the council still chose to press ahead with a "master plan" for the park and mansion.

After 70 years of total disinterest, this unwanted intervention will squander taxpayers' money.

This is a classic example of institutional arrogance - "we know what is best for you." Only reluctantly has it now been agreed to consult the two local councils who have so diligently preserved the park.

Decisions about Nonsuch's future must be made by those who represent local residents and park users, not by a remote, previously disinterested County Council.
