Leatherhead assistant manager Steve Wood says his side is suffering from a lack of confidence as their promotion challenge continues to stutter.

The Tanners drew a blank against lowly Whyteleafe on Tuesday in a 0-0 draw that has all but ended their Ryman Division One South play-off aspirations.

And despite taking a 3-1 lead against Ashford Town on Saturday through two goals from Ian Hendry and another from Mark Charles-Smith, the Tanners only claimed a point after a spirited Ashford comeback at Fetcham Grove.

Even more frustratingly for Dave Harlow's men, Steve Sargent saw a second-half penalty saved which would have given Leatherhead a seemingly-unassailable 4-1 lead.

And Wood says his side's poor form, which has seen them secure just two points from their past five games, is down to a lack of confidence.

"I think some of our players, even our more senior players, are beginning to doubt themselves," said Wood.

"We went 2-0 up and then 3-1 up on Saturday and I was thinking this was just what we needed - but once it got to 3-2 we were edgy again.

"We need our senior players to be leaders on the pitch if we are to have any chance of making the play-offs."

Wood says his side need to cut out lapses of concentration if they are to have any chance of securing a top-six spot.

"I think a little bit of naivety has crept into our game of late," he said.

"We have been lacking concentration, which shouldn't happen.

"We've got people here who have been playing football for a long time and we need those players to step up a bit more now."

Leatherhead travel to Hastings United on Saturday.
