A man who was arrested for arson after a huge blaze at a derelict building will have no further action taken against him, police have said today.

Flames ripped through Acer House, in East Street, Epsom, just after 2am on Thursday, February 19.

No one was hurt or injured in the incident but Terri Stockley-Hetherington, who witnessed the blaze, said she had "never seen fire ravage anything so quickly".

The 54-year-old man, believed to be local, was arrested on suspicion of arson shortly after the fire.

Today, police said the man has been "released with no further action being taken against him".

The cause of the fire is not known.

Your Local Guardian:

The blaze on February 19 was the second time in less than a week the building had been hit by fire.

Just days before, on Valentine’s Day, February 14, police were called to a large rubbish fire by the side of Acer House.

Following the first fire, Surrey Police said a man in his 50s was arrested on suspicion of arson.

It is understood he was not charged.

Surrey Police would not confirm whether the same man was arrested in relation to both fires.

Your Local Guardian:

The empty building was sold last March by Surrey and Borders Partnership NHS Trust, which provides specialist mental health, drug and alcohol and learning disabilities services.

It had used it as a base for its community teams.

In December, planning permission was granted for the demolition of Acer House and the erection of a three-storey block of flats.
