A cameraman will be standing for election as Epsom and Ewell’s independent MP to capture on film how people can "stand up against this system".

Gareth Harfoot, 35, of Cullerne Close, Ewell, was the last candidate to throw his hat into the ring for May 7’s General Election when nominations closed yesterday.

Born and raised in Hong Kong, Mr Harfoot has lived in the UK for 17 years, and for the last three years in Ewell.

The 35-year-old said he dropped out of medical school and worked as a door-to-door salesman, was employed at the British Museum and completed a degree in environmental geoscience at University College London, before deciding to pursue his passion of film-making.

He said a "massive life crisis" in his mid-20s made him realise he "had degrees that were nothing to do with what I wanted to do".

Mr Harfoot said he is standing for election to engage people with what the process involves as an independent candidate – who he believes can be more representative of constituents because they are not aligned to any political party.

"I don’t have much of a chance at all of winning," he said.

"But I’m a cameraman so I figured I could document the process and show other people how to run so the next time there’s an election other people, who are better suited to it than I am, will have the information.

"Without the backing of a party you really are up against it."

He added: "Regular people can run and represent people in their constituency rather than these people who run with a particular party, following a party line, not really supporting their constituents at all.

"Chris Grayling has been doing all this stuff around getting Epsom into Zone 6, but he voted against rail fares capping."

Mr Harfoot said he was "fairly apathetic" before deciding to stand for election.

"Now I’m actually doing something," he said.

"Even if I don’t win, I can show other people how they can stand up against this system which is stacked against the majority of the population."

Mr Harfoot joins Conservative Chris Grayling, Labour's Sheila Carlson, UKIP's Robert Leach, the Green party's Susan McGrath, Liberal Democrat Steve Gee, and independent candidate Lionel Blackman in the race to Westminster for Epsom and Ewell.
