A former chief executive of Epsom Council who was left unable to speak after suffering a stroke accepted a £3,600 donation on behalf of a specialist charity which has helped him.

David Smith visited the ladies’ section of Epsom Golf Club to accept a donation of £3,670 to Dyscover, based on Walton-on-the-Hill, which has helped Mr Smith for the past five years.

He was accompanied by Gill Jackson MBE, who founded Dyscover 21 years ago.

It was set up to help stoke survivors overcome communication problems and has a number of members in Epsom and Ewell.

On the day, Mr Smith used gesture, a notepad and his book of photos and facts to talk about his family, the effects of his stroke, and how Dyscover has helped him.

The cheque was presented by ladies’ captain Rita Collins.
