Surbiton hockey club’s Alan Forsyth admitted it was just one of those days after their EHL Premier Division finals weekend at Lee Valley ended in disappointment.
A 2-0 defeat to neighbours Wimbledon in Saturday’s semi-final, meant Sunday’s 2-1 win over Beeston was little but scant consolation.
To rub salt into the wounds, Wimbledon’s win also saw them take Surbiton’s place in next season’s Euro Hockey League.
Forsyth, who bagged both goals in the win over Beeston, said: “We just didn’t show up against Wimbledon and it was one of those days.
“It’s tough to get up for a game after that disappointment, and Beeston was always going to be a hard test.
“It was nice to face them at a different venue even though it wasn’t the game we wanted to be playing.
“We controlled the game, maybe not on the ball, but off it. When we had to win it, we won it, and that’s how we played, and it came off.”
Clubmate Chris Grasswick said: “We were very disappointed with out performance against Wimbledon, we just weren’t good enough from the start really.
“We had a few chances but could not capitalise and fair play to Wimbledon, they played well.
“We’ve had a great season and were just pipped to the top, but when it comes down to it, we’ve got to do better in the big games.”
