Primary school places have been announced and roughly 96 in every 100 children got a preferred place, Sutton council has announced.

Across the borough there were 2,667 youngsters going through the process with 2,243 getting into a first choice school, approximately 84 per cent. This compares favourably with the London average of about 81 per cent.

Of those who were not allocated a preferred choice, only three are still yet to be found a school, a council spokesman said.

Colin Stewart, executive head of education and early intervention, said: "We have worked hard with our primary schools so once again the majority Sutton's children get an offer of a school place.

"We are confident that Sutton's performance on helping parents secure one of their preferences compares very favourably with the position across the country."

Of those remaining, 7.7 per cent achieved their second choice and 2.7 per cent got their third choice allocation ahead of the children's' September start.

Sutton council said that Department for Education ranked the borough's primary schools joint second in the country, with an average of 87 per cent of pupils achieving level 4 reading, writing and maths combined.
