A man, thought to be in his 30s, has been killed following a crash, the Metropolitan Police has said.

Officers from Sutton police were called to the junction of Belmont Rise and Northdown Road at about 6.52pm last night, by London Ambulance after a transit van and motorcycle crashed.

David White, 67, of Northdown Road, lives opposite the crash site.

He came out after hearing the smash saw the motorcycle lying about 20 metres from where the rider had come off.

He said the motorcyclist was coming up from Sutton when the bike and van crashed, knocking the man off and sending the bike flying off down the road before erupting into flames.

An Air Ambulance landed in the nearby church with a further four ambulances, two fire engines and officers from Sutton police all attending.

Officers stayed at the crash site until 2am.

Mr White said: "This is the second death we have seen at this same spot.

"We have asked for something to be done about it.

"We've been here for 20 years and we've had a car coming into our garden right through the bush.

"There have been 20 or 30 accidents.

"Something needs to be done about that site.

"There are about four or five accidents a year. There was a fatality at the same spot, just the other side of the road. That happened about four years ago, and we often see his mother placing flowers there."

Another witness said people came out of their homes after hearing a bang.

There were about four of five people who came out to help the man as they waited for the ambulance to arrive.

A spokesman for the Met said: "Officers and an air ambulance rapid response car attended the scene.

"The rider of the motorcycle, a man aged in his 30s, was pronounced dead at the scene.

"Next of kin have been informed and we await formal identification.

"A post-mortem examination will be held in due course.

"The male driver of the van stopped at the scene. He was not arrested."

Officers from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit at Merton are investigating. Those with information that may assist the investigation are asked to call police on 020 8543 5157.
