Residents go to the polls on May 7. The Sutton Guardian gives you the lowdown on the runners and riders hoping to become your next MP.

Your Local Guardian:

Tom Brake - Liberal Democrats

Mr Brake was been MP in Carshalton and Wallington since 1997. He holds a degree in physics from Imperial and worked in IT prior to entering politics.

He said: "I am a full-time MP and do not take on paid directorships and consultancies. Regular weekly surgeries and street stalls keep me informed about people’s concerns and give people regular oportunities to raise issues with me.

"My top priority since I was elected has been the future of St Helier Hospital. I care about it because, like tens of thousands of other local people, my family benefited from the hospital’s excellent care; both my children were born at the maternity.

"I also campaign on other critical issues like apprenticeships and transport. I helped save Thameslink services and secure the partial re-introduction of the night bus."

Your Local Guardian:

Ashley Dickenson - Christian Peoples Alliance

A Carshalton Beeches resident since 1992, Mr Dickenson has stood in local elections in 2006, 2010 and 2014. A retired civil servant, working as admin support for the Metropolitan Police, he is a presenter with Radio St Helier, is a member of the Royal British Legion and assists at Sutton Food Bank.

He said: "To put it in a historical context: as the late William Wilberforce and his Clapham Sect stood against the “prevailing ideological canon” and the norms of their time, eg, slavery that was legal and condoned by the church, so my philosophy is, like fellow Christian Democrats and true Bible-believing Christians, to make a stand against the increasing secularisation and moral relativism of our nation that the church has tolerated, if not tacitly supported, eg, the legalisation of same-sex marriages."

Your Local Guardian:

Richard Edmonds - Natonal Front

Mr Edmonds stood as an independent in Worcester Park in the local elections last year and has lived in Sutton with his wife for a decade. He has spent time living and working in Australia, Canada, Russia and Germany as an engineer.

He said: "Britain’s problems are pressing and many, particularly for those who live and work in the large conurbations: crime, mass-immigration and social alienation are threatening British civilisation.

"Who can forget the riots of the summer of 2011? The authorities lost all control, as mobs looted, burned down shops and terrorised neighbourhoods.

"Labour, Tory and Lib Dem governments have presided over this dreadful collapse of law and order.

"The same parties have permitted millions of foreigners to flock to our country, making parts of Britain unrecognisable."

Your Local Guardian:

Ross Hemingway - Green

Standing for public office for the first time, Mr Hemingway is a communications officer for charity International Development Charity Christian Aid.

He said: "We must build a society that works for the common good, not just an elite few.

"The Greens would bring the railways back into public hands, raise the minimum wage to £10/hour and make sure everyone has a home they can afford to live in.

"It is time to address the massive inequality in our society and end austerity.

"The Greens would introduce a wealth tax on the top 1 per cent and a Robin Hood tax on the banks.

"Locally, I will campaign to make our streets better for cycling and walking, to save Beddington Farmlands from an expensive, polluting incinerator, and to save St Helier Hospital from creeping privatisation and closure."

Your Local Guardian:

Bill Main-Ian - UKIP

A Sutton resident for 30 years, Mr Main-Ian is a former police officer who lost his right leg in a traffic accident in 2000. He has represented mental health users and helped run a mental health circle of
support.

He said: "UKIP is a political party that has changed the political narrative, led on major issues such as immigration, wanting to ensure the wealth created is preserved for future generations and withdrawing from the EU.

"UKIP came first in the European elections in 2014 in the borough.

"The electorate sent a clear message then and can do so again in the general election by voting for UKIP and me representing UKIP.

"That clear message to the Government is that they want “out” of the EU and as UKIP are the only party that will deliver that, it is imperative we have UKIP MPs to deliver that message."

Your Local Guardian:

Matthew Maxwell Scott -  Conservative

A former Wandsworth councillor, Mr Maxwell Scott is a professional speechwriter at the BBC, has worked in insurance and for the Confederation of British Industry.

He said: "I love our area, am committed to public service and have a great record as a councillor, a governor of a local secondary school and the chairman of my safer neighbourhood team.

"This election offers voters the choice between the Conservatives’ long-term economic plan or risking it all with more borrowing, debt and chaos under Labour.

"A Conservative MP and a Conservative majority government will make sure we can continue creating more jobs, reducing the deficit, putting more people in a position to own their own home, offering more assistance with childcare, reducing taxes and making sure we can all have security in retirement."

Your Local Guardian:

Siobhan Tate - Labour

Head of art at an academy in Hackney, Mrs Tate lives in Islington and is standing for election for the first time.

She said: "My ambition in entering politics was to show that people, with different life experiences, can make a difference.

"You can be confident that I share your high expectations for the quality of life.

"I will work tirelessly to make sure you are well served with what you need to get on: affordable housing, transport, health and education.

"I will be available at public events, weekly surgeries and a face-to-face public consultation annually.

"I will keep my ear to the ground by volunteering every month with an organisation.

"My office will be open and welcoming for you, and I will ensure it pays staff the living wage.

"I will be consistent in my values and about getting things done."
