A private school headmaster stepped down at the end of last month due to "personal health reasons", it has emerged.

David Williams informed governors at the independent preparatory Chinthurst School, in Tadworth, that he would be leaving on April 9, with parents being informed by letter a week later.

Tim Button, who was the deputy headteacher, will be the acting headmaster until Mr Williams’ replacement is appointed "in due course".

In his letters to parents and staff, Mr Williams said: "Chinthurst is a great school.

"It has great staff, parents and children and I am tremendously proud of our achievements during my time as headmaster.

"I thank you for your support and enthusiasm and I wish the school every success in the future.’

Mr Williams added: "The teaching body and operational staff at Chinthurst are highly talented and, under the leadership of Tim Button, I have every confidence they will carry on the work we have already put in."
